About

The person behind the research, writing and experiments.

I’m Chathura Sarathchandra, a systems researcher, engineer, inventor and writer. My work sits at the intersection of wireless communications and emerging computing: how networks, intelligent systems and new forms of computing can be turned into useful end-to-end systems.

Professionally, I work on next-generation communication systems, including 5G-Advanced and 6G, standards, distributed systems, AI/ML, XR and quantum technologies. I have spent much of my career moving between research questions, system architecture, prototyping, standards and invention rather than treating them as separate activities.

Background

I studied Computer Science at the University of Essex, graduating with First-Class Honours, and later completed a PhD in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering. Since then I have worked across academic, collaborative research and industrial R&D environments.

My professional record — current research themes, projects, publications, patents, standards activity and professional service — now lives in Research & Work rather than on this page.

What drives the work

I am most interested in problems that sit between established disciplines: places where communication systems meet AI, distributed computing, quantum technology, human-computer interaction or new scientific tools. I like building working systems alongside writing and theory because prototypes tend to expose assumptions that are easy to miss on paper.

Beyond research

Outside formal research I keep a collection of experiments and side quests in The Sandbox. It is where mycology, Minecraft engineering, speculative ideas and other interests can develop without needing to pretend they are part of a research programme.
